Everyone visiting the Attabad lake in Hunza valley is awestruck by its beauty, but only a few are actually aware of how the lake came into being.
Attabad Lake was the result of a massive landslide in 2010 which blocked the flow of the Hunza River, creating a new natural lake. Five months after the incident, the lake grew about 21km in length, displaying a picturesque view of gleaming blue water surrounded by mountains all around. Fast forward to the present, the Attabad lake has become a popular tourist attraction offering various activities such as boating, fishing and jet skiing. Many resorts and campsites have also been constructed by the lake to let the guests experience the stunning landscape all around.
The lake is located in the Gojal region of Hunza Valley in Gilgit−Baltistan. You can opt for a traditional boat ride in a colorfully painted boat or enjoy the cool breeze on your face in a speedboat ride through the crystal-clear waters. The lake is completely frozen in the winters and looks like it’s covered with blue glass on the surface, providing another dazzling view.
With more focus on tourism in the past few years, many different companies are thinking of utilizing the opportunities to promote our northern areas to local travellers and foreign tourists as well. It seems like PC is also planning on opening a resort near Attabad Lake to provide premium hospitality to the visitors, while also preserving the natural beauty of the area. The land which was once deserted has sprung to life again thanks to the efforts of the locals and the enthusiastic tourists that keep coming back to have another glance at this beautiful landscape.
